"A Step in a Digital Direction"
A Free Digital Art Class for Native Youth & Adults
This past weekend, December 11 & 12, the free digital art classes was offered. “A Step in a Digital Direction” is a free digital art class for Native youth ages 11 - 17. There were a few extra openings so the class was opened to adults as well. The classes were held at the Radisson. Everyone learned the basics of using an iPad and the Procreate app. They explored digital brushes, colors, textures, shading and so much more. Even though the classes were filled, we were able to squeeze in a couple more people who had their own devices. Digital art is a great way to express oneself. The artwork you create can be turned into prints, canvas prints, cards, t-shirts, hats and more. This was a great opportunity for our Native youth and adults. All participants will receive a print of their favorite creation and may have the opportunity to participate in the 2022 Woodland Indian Art Show & Market.
Weeya Calif was the instructor. She has 22 years experience in teaching art and recently was awarded a grant for her school district to start a digital art class for over 600 6th graders. She was awarded another grant through the Dollars for Art Program run by the Oneida Nations Art Program and funding from the sponsors listed below. This year Weeya was nominated for the Teacher of Distinction Award. She is also an artist and storyteller. Her greatest joy is teaching art. For more information on the instructor, please visit her websites listed here.
